it may just be coincidence but it appears that all of the DT-380s we've seen with undocumented finishes were manufactured in 1984.

[1]	the Serial Number Format for this model is myypppp where: m = month of manufacture (e.g.: A = Jan, B = Feb, ... , K = Nov, L = Dec) yy = last two digits of the year of manufacture (e.g.: 85 = 1985) pppp = the sequential production number for this individual guitar out of all Ibanez electric guitars manufactured during the specified month/year at a given factory Note: pppp is not the total number of guitars manufactured of this model.

[2]	some DT-380s have three controls but the majority of them only have two controls. We're not certain why this is so but it seems to occur only in the Red Sun alternate finish and in the Safari pattern variant colors blue and multi-colored. See the discussion regarding the speculative DT-388.

[3]	in addition to the three (3) documented finishes (Barbed Wire, Red Sun, and Safari Red), there have been several undocumented finishes. The black and white striped pattern shown at the top of this page is probably the most common. There also exists a variant of the Red Sun pattern (see below). There are two known variants of the Safari pattern. One is Safari Blue as shown above. The other is many colored. The body's back and sides are a metallic bluish-purple. The body's front is yellow. The stripes fade from bluish-purple to pinkish-red. We have also seen two separate instances of a completely black finish, both from England, but we are uncertain whether this finish is aftermarket since it seems localized.

[4]	the targeted Market values are assumptions based upon the geographic region or the language of the catalog(s) in which a given model appears. If a model appears in a Japanese language catalog, the Market is assumed to be East. If a model appears in an English language catalog, the Market is assumed to be West. Otherwise, geographic area such as North America or Asia determines the market designation of East or West.

1984 DT-380 Red Sun alternate graphic finish

There is a known albeit rare alternate graphic for the Red Sun (RS) finish. Be careful, however, there are aftermarket companies that are offering a custom graphic finish that is extremely similar to this alternate graphic.

Prototype DT-380 Red Sun

I was pleasantly surprised when I received the following email from Christian Dorat, the artist/designer who created what we are calling the alternate Red Sun pattern for the DT-380.

Hello,

Maybe you will be interested by this story: I created the design for that guitar.

It was in the beginning of the year 1984 and Hoshino had asked us to create a limited series for the French market.

I created it and they gave me the prototype.

As you can see, it is dedicated by Mike Shimara (later president of Ibanez/Tama for the U.S.A) and Tony Kawamoto.

That's the story of the beginning of this model and the following ones.

Unfortunatly, the French society (SOCARO) split 8 months later so the series was sold in the U.S.A.
